Code of Ethics

The ethical principles of SHO#Dnipro: accuracy, independence, humanity, transparency, source protection and accountability to readers.

Last reviewed:

The SHO#Dnipro Code of Ethics describes how the newsroom works with news, story subjects, sources, photos, advertising and mistakes. Its purpose is to protect the trust of readers in Dnipro and the Dnipropetrovsk region.

1. Accuracy and honesty

We publish information only when we understand where it comes from and can explain that origin to readers. In news stories, we separate confirmed facts from assumptions, assessments and forecasts.

  • We do not present rumours, social media posts or unverified reports as established facts.
  • If details are still being clarified, we say so directly in the story.
  • We do not change the meaning of quotes or remove words from their context.

2. Independence

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom. Politicians, officials, advertisers, partners or platform owners cannot dictate which facts we report or what conclusions a story reaches.

Commercial or partner content must be clearly labelled. Advertising must not be disguised as editorial news.

3. Humanity and minimising harm

We remember that there are people behind every news story. We are especially careful with stories about shelling, people killed or injured, children, violence, illness, displaced people and people in crisis.

  • We do not publish personal data without a clear public interest.
  • We do not use photos or videos that humiliate people or may harm victims.
  • We avoid hate speech, stereotypes and discriminatory wording.

4. Working with sources

We name sources of information where it is possible and safe to do so. We grant anonymity only when the information is in the public interest and identifying the source could create a risk for them.

Information from sources is checked through documents, official announcements, open data, comments from other sides or other independent confirmation.

5. Conflicts of interest

An author or editor must tell the newsroom if a story is connected to their personal, financial, political or professional interests. In such cases, the newsroom may assign the story to another author or add a disclosure for readers.

6. Photos, video and copyright

We use visual content with respect for copyright, privacy and the context of the event. We do not use manipulative illustrations where they could create a false impression of a fact.

7. Corrections

If we make a mistake, we correct the story as quickly as possible. Significant corrections are marked in the text or in a note to the story. Readers can report an error through the feedback form or the newsroom contacts.

8. Review of this code

We review this code at least once a year or after important changes in legislation, journalism standards or newsroom work.
