Diversity Policy

How SHO#Dnipro aims to cover different communities, experiences and views in Dnipro and the region without discrimination or stereotypes.

Last reviewed:

The SHO#Dnipro Diversity Policy explains how the newsroom aims to see and hear different groups of people in Dnipro and the Dnipropetrovsk region. For us, diversity is not a formality; it is a way to make news more accurate, useful and closer to real community life.

1. What we mean

We consider different experiences shaped by age, gender, place of residence, language, profession, social situation, disability, religion, ethnic origin, displacement, military service and other circumstances that may affect a person’s life.

2. Diversity in topics and people

  • We seek voices not only from officials and press offices, but also from people affected by decisions and events.
  • We cover districts, communities and groups that may be less visible in the general news flow.
  • We do not reduce a person to one characteristic, such as displacement status, age, disability, language or social situation.
  • We explain context when a topic concerns a vulnerable group or may reinforce prejudice.

3. Non-discriminatory language

We avoid stereotypes, degrading wording and unnecessary emphasis on a person’s origin, health, private life or other characteristic unless it is directly relevant to the story. In doubtful cases, we choose neutral, accurate and humane language.

4. Balance of sources

The newsroom aims to use different sources and experts, especially in stories about education, healthcare, safety, social policy, transport, business and community life. We check a source’s expertise rather than using a person only as a “representative of a group”.

5. Content accessibility

We work to make the website and stories clear and accessible: we use clear headings, structured texts, alternative text for important images and explain complex terms in plain language.

6. Mistakes and feedback

If readers notice inaccurate, stereotypical or discriminatory wording, they can contact the newsroom through the feedback form. We review such messages under our editorial rules and correct the story when needed.
