At 01:20 AM on September 5, the Kamentstal PJSC metallurgical plant in Kamianske came under missile attack. Russia used five Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles. The most significant damage was sustained in the areas near blast furnace No. 1, blast furnace No. 12, and the gas station.
Casualties and Destruction
As a result of the strike, five plant employees were killed. Another five sustained injuries of varying severity. The missiles damaged a gas pipeline, causing a flare fire. Rescuers extinguished the fire, which covered an area of 60 square meters, around 06:00 AM. Gas supply to the enterprise has been cut off.
Both blast furnaces that were operating at the time of the attack were damaged. Due to this, the plant's operations have been completely halted. Emergency rescue services and the investigative and operational group of the National Police are working on site: debris is being cleared, the consequences of the hits are being eliminated, and water supply networks are being repaired.
Recovery Prospects
It is impossible to restart production without a major overhaul of the blast furnaces. According to preliminary estimates, recovery could take at least 2 months. The exact extent of the damage and the timeline for restarting will become known after a detailed inspection of the facilities. The owners will make a final decision on the future of the enterprise based on this assessment.
