The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention published the results of its weekly environmental monitoring for August 28 - September 3. Among 34 samples of river water, seven showed the presence of cholera-like vibrio – a non-epidemic strain that is not a causative agent of classical cholera but can provoke acute intestinal infection. Concurrently, as part of enhanced epidemiological surveillance for cholera, 92 individuals with symptoms of intestinal disorders were examined – no confirmed cases of infection were found.
Drinking water remains safe: laboratories checked 122 samples across the entire Dnipropetrovsk region, microbiological indicators comply with standards, and no pathogens were found. In 21 samples, minor deviations in physico-chemical parameters were recorded, but specialists classify them as stable long-term values without anomalies. No outbreaks of infections related to drinking water have been registered in the region. The radiation gamma background at control points does not exceed 18 µR/h and corresponds to the natural level for the region.
Where the vibrio was found
Contaminated samples were taken in five settlements of the region:
Dnipro city - Dnipro River in the area of Sagaidak Park and Monastyrsky Island;
Pidhorodne city - Kilchen River in the recreation area;
Tsarychanka village - Orel River near Dibrova Stadium;
Marhanets city - Tomakivka River (Mykolaiv Reservoir);
Samar city and Orlivshchyna village - Samara River within the city children's beach and recreation area.
In addition to microbiological deviations, out of 8 river water samples tested for physico-chemical parameters, 25 tests did not meet hygienic standards – mainly due to mineral composition and increased chemical and biological oxygen demand.
Incidence of ARVI and intestinal infections
During the reporting week, about 3,000 residents of Dnipropetrovsk region fell ill with ARVI, which is 3.6% more than a week earlier. At the same time, this indicator is 61.2% lower than in the corresponding period last year. Almost 42% of all sick people are children.
The number of registered cases of acute intestinal infections was 106 – 24.3% less compared to the previous week. More than 60% of patients are children under 17 years of age.
This season, no beach in the region has officially opened. The epidemiological situation in the region, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, remains stable: no outbreaks of infectious diseases have been recorded.
