A large fire broke out at the landfill in Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk region. Local residents are reporting the fire, noting smoke in the city.
According to residents of Kamianske, the smoke spread towards the Sotsmisto district and affected adjacent parts of Kamianske. Due to this, residents are urged to close windows tightly and not let air from the street into their homes.
The situation may remain difficult not only for a short time: waste at the landfill can smolder and burn for a long time. That is why residents should be prepared not for a single deterioration of air quality, but for a potentially longer period of smoke.
What residents are advised to do during smoke exposure
During a period of smoke spread, it is advisable to minimize contact with polluted air. Particular caution should be exercised in the morning and at night, when smoke may linger lower and be more noticeable near residential buildings.
Do not go outside unnecessarily, especially in the morning and at night.
If you need to go out, use an FFP2 or FFP3 respirator. If a respirator is not available, you can temporarily use a moistened mask.
After returning home, change clothes, take a shower, and rinse your eyes and nose.
How to reduce smoke entering your home
In apartments and houses, it is recommended to create a space as closed off as possible from outdoor air. This does not completely eliminate the problem, but it can reduce the amount of smoke and dust inside the premises.
Keep all windows closed.
Turn off air conditioners that draw air from outside.
If possible, seal cracks through which smoke may enter.
Regularly perform wet cleaning.
Place containers with water to help dust settle faster.
Residents are also advised to drink more clean water or tea. Smoking indoors should be avoided to prevent further deterioration of air quality.
If signs of possible smoke poisoning appear - dizziness, nausea, or severe coughing - you should consult a doctor.
