In the Facebook community «History in photographs Katerynoslav – Dnipropetrovsk – Dnipro» a photograph of Dnipro's main avenue, taken in the 1950s, appeared.
The photo shows the street, which was then called Karl Marx Avenue, and is now known as Dmytro Yavornytsky Avenue. The shot features the building of the Central Department Store (TSUM), the adjacent buildings, as well as trams, buses, and cars on the bustling city thoroughfare. Many structures captured in the frame either have not survived to our days or have undergone significant changes.
Before World War II, on the spot where the first tram is visible in the photo, stood the house of the famous Katerynoslav jeweler Granovsky. This building was considered an architectural adornment of the central avenue but was destroyed during the war and was not restored.
To the left of TSUM in the photo, a building attached to the department store is visible. Later, it was dismantled, and TSUM itself was expanded, which changed the appearance of the block compared to the middle of the last century. TSUM opened in 1938; it was damaged during World War II, but after the city's liberation, it was restored. For decades, the department store remained one of the main shopping centers and recognizable symbols of the central part of Dnipro.
Archival photos show how the city's appearance changed after the war: individual historic buildings disappeared, transport routes transformed, and Dmytro Yavornytsky Avenue gradually acquired a modern look.
